"Save energy " Public awareness-raising campaign

Consumers' contribution to energy saving is a strategic issue, as we are responsible for 30% of total energy consumption in Spain.

"Save energy " Public awareness-raising campaign

In this campaign we use a logo/brand to identify actions, projects and programmes being carried out as a part of the 2008-2011 Activation Plan for Energy Efficiency and Savings.

The campaign as a whole, including the launch of the logo, is the outcome of a cooperation agreement between the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Trade, represented by the Instituto para la Diversificación y Ahorro de la Energía (IDAE) and the Spanish Football Federation, Real Federación Española de Fútbol.  The campaign includes players expressing their support for energy savings in the media, along with the presence of the “tips for energy savings” logo at stadiums. Activities involving direct contact with the public will also be run at sports facilities and at matches, including the Ciudad del Fútbol de las Rozas (Madrid), together with online activities, etc. Under the cooperation agreement, the IDAE will be performing an energy audit on the Ciudad del Fútbol, which is the home of the Spanish national side, in order to optimise its energy consumption on lighting, heating, air-conditioning, etc. and to study the possibility of implementing renewable-energy-based systems. The aim is to turn this emblematic sports facility into an example for others to follow.

This agreement was signed in the framework of the dissemination and awareness-raising activities envisaged in the 2008-2011 Activation Plan for Energy Efficiency and Savings. The plan aims for Spain, which depends on external sources of supply for 80% of its energy, to achieve a reduction of 44 million barrels of crude oil, equivalent to 10% of the country's annual oil imports, by the end of the period.

The logo

The logo has been designed to represent visually the action of a hand on a switch. It therefore embodies the concept of energy savings and it uses the red and yellow colour-scheme typically identifying ministerial bodies, thus associating it with the public sphere.

Its application will go beyond the campaign, as it has been created with a view to its becoming the identifying sign of the whole range of actions, projects and programmes run under the aegis of efforts to implement the measures envisaged in Spain's Energy Savings and Efficiency Strategy and Activation Plan, which will mobilise 2,367 million euros in public funds. In short, the new logo is intended to identify these publicly-supported activities.

Some of these activities will affect the public directly, and  the "Save Energy" logo will also be on display when they are being publicised. These actions and measures include the household electrical appliance renewal plan (Plan RENOVE), the plan to upgrade the stock of vehicles, along with urban mobility plans, plans promoting electric cars, the programme to replace incandescent light bulbs by low consumption bulbs, the refurbishment of thermal envelopes in buildings, promoting efficient driving, etc.

Raising public awareness

The overall aim of the awareness-raising campaign is to bring about a situation in which consumers contribute to Spain's strategic objectives for saving energy.

It should be borne in mind that as citizens (either at home or in our cars) we are responsible for 30% of the country's total energy consumption. By changing our individual habits and making sensible use of household appliances and lighting, or changing the way we buy equipment and use our vehicles, this percentage could be reduced considerably, with a significant cumulative effect.

A number of figures stand out which are worth mentioning. For example, if we reduced the number of times we take the car to work by just 1%, using public transport instead, we would achieve an annual savings of up to 20 million litres of fuel, 49,000 tonnes of CO2 and 17 million euros in energy costs. In the case of lighting, if just one low consumption light bulb were fitted in each of Spain's 13.5 million homes, the savings in energy costs would come to 200 million euros a year, and 2 million tonnes of CO2 emissions would be avoided. For each degree centigrade you lower the temperature of the central heating or raise the temperature of the air-conditioning, you can save up to 7% on the energy bill. Efficient driving, which is to say, driving smoothly without sudden acceleration and with the tyres at the right pressure, can also reduce consumption by as much as 15%. Another example is that each passenger travelling by public transport uses three times less energy than when travelling by car.
