- Basic lighting units
These are the parameters shown on the label: light efficiency, luminous flux and useful life. (These are defined in the section under each heading).
- Biodiesel
Ester obtained by means of reaction between methyl or ethyl alcohol and fatty acids obtained from the hydrolysis of triglycerides, vegetable oils or animal fats in the presence of a catalyst. Its properties as a fuel are very similar to those of diesel and it can be used in diesel engines either on its own or mixed with diesel.
- Bioethanol
Dehydrated ethyl alcohol, which is produced by fermenting hydrocarbon-rich biomass. It can be used in internal combustion engines, either on its own or mixed with petrol or diesel, or as an octane enhancer, given its high oxygen content.
- Biofuel
Solid, liquid or gaseous fuel obtained from biomass.
- Biofuel cell
Fuel cell using a liquid or gaseous biofuel as a source of hydrogen.
- Biogas
A mixture of methane and carbon dioxide, together with traces of other gases such as hydrogen, nitrogen, hydrogen sulphide and water vapour, which is produced by anaerobic digestion of organic matter.
- Biomass
Ensemble of organic matter of vegetable or animal origin, or resulting from the natural or artificial transformation of vegetable or animal matter, which can be used (directly or indirectly) as a source of energy.
- Blade
The part of a turbine that rotates when driven by the wind, and which turns the wind's kinetic energy into rotational energy along the axis of the rotor.
