1974
It was born as an Energy Study Centre and its main feature was to be a management body of the State’s General Administration without financial autonomy.

1984
It was named Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving, IDAE, and became an Autonomous body with technical autonomy.
Functions:
Energy audits and diagnoses
Rural electrification plans
Pre-diagnosis and counselling in energy diversification and saving
Administration of funds for the allowances to incentivised actions
1986
It became a State Company with a capacity to provide the following techical and financial services:
Energy efficiency improvement actions.
Planning and establishment of renewable energies.
Actions in the market to promote in the energy saving and diversification.
1999
As a Public Business Body with financial autonomy, it has the following competences:
Improve energy efficiency and enhance the establishment of renewable energies.
Revitalise the market through the presentation of technical and financial services for innovation projects which, moreover, are replicable.
Give expression to the energy efficiency and development of renewable energies of the Ministry of Industry and Energy through actions, until the creation of the Ministry of Science and Technology, which is the Ministry IDAE depended on till July 2002.
2002
The Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving was ascribed to the Ministry of Economy, through the Secretariat of State for Energy, Industrial Development and of the Small & Medium Enterprise on 26th July by Royal Decree 777/2002.
2004
The Institute for Energy Diversification and Saving was ascribed to the Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce through the Secretariat of State for Energy, on 17th April 2004, through Royal Decree 553/2004; its competences were approved by Order ITC/1102/2004 published in the B.O.E. (Spanish Official Gazette) No. 103 of 28th April 2004. Its then president was Fernando Marti Scharfhausen.
